What Is Penpoint?
Penpoint is a desktop app where fiction writers write their manuscript and organize their entire fictional world in one place.
Writers juggle Word for drafting, spreadsheets for characters, Notion for worldbuilding, and a whiteboard for timelines. Every time they need to check a detail, they leave their writing and lose their train of thought. Penpoint puts the manuscript editor, character profiles, relationship maps, arcs, locations, and search all in one place.
Standout Features
Chapter Scanner
Import a manuscript from Word, EPUB, or plain text. Right-click a chapter and scan it. Penpoint reads the prose and finds every character, location, and item mentioned. Review the matches, click Apply, and the worldbuilding side populates in seconds. This is usually the "oh wow" moment.
Glorious Searchbar
Hit Ctrl+K (or Cmd+K) and search across your manuscript, characters, locations, and notes at once. Find any detail in your entire book instantly without leaving what you're working on.
Manuscript Editor
Clean editor with scene management, chapter groups, drafts and versions, and a 60-language offline spellchecker. Import from Word, EPUB, Markdown, or plain text. Export to any of those plus PDF and RTF.
Visual Worldbuilding
Relationship maps, story arc visualizers, character fortune curves, nested locations, timelines, and tags. Customizable character profiles with blocks you add or remove. Everything is cross-referenced and searchable.
Flowstate
A forward-only writing mode where sentences lock behind you as you write. Timed sprints with alternating writing and editing windows. Designed for writers who keep rewriting instead of moving forward.
Privacy-First
All data stored locally on the writer's computer. No account, no cloud, no AI. Works completely offline. Auto-backup writes to the user's own cloud storage folder for safety.
How It Compares
- vs. Scrivener ($59.99): Organizes manuscripts but has no worldbuilding tools. Penpoint does both, costs less, and one license covers all platforms.
- vs. Campfire (subscription / bundles): Has worldbuilding but no manuscript editor. Penpoint combines writing and worldbuilding in one app.
- vs. Dabble (up to $30/month): One beta tester switching from Dabble said Penpoint "out-featured it." Penpoint is a one-time $40 purchase.
- vs. Plottr ($14.99/month or $419 lifetime): Penpoint includes visual plotting, a full manuscript editor, and worldbuilding.
- vs. World Anvil (subscription): Data stays private and offline. No subscription tiers. Plus you can write your manuscript in Penpoint too.
What Writers Say
Penpoint was beta tested by 100+ writers across multiple genres. These are direct quotes.
"Penpoint is THE writing app. If you want something that provides some structure for your planning, then acts as a quiet companion for the writing, this is it. From world building, to character creation, to helping you easily find things within your manuscript, to just sitting down and writing the damn thing... this is a writer's best friend."L.M. Whiteley, author of the Hitmen of Ulysses series
"It's everything you need, with a UI that doesn't distract from actually writing. It's better than everyone else because it's cleaner, easier, stronger, and actually written for authors, by authors."Jesse Gerlach, author of Sound Shaper Series
"The plan I'm on is $30 a month for Dabble and Penpoint has out-featured it."WarMaiden, beta tester switching from Dabble
"I've been looking for years for a story bible software that fit the way my brain works, one that I can write in and link back to the pages of information for the things I'm writing. And it's finally here!"Beta tester
"I didn't realize how much I needed Penpoint until I finally tried it. It has everything I need to keep my chaotic ideas organized in one place, and it's actually helping me improve my writing along the way. It's so easy to use and everything is so well structured that now I can spend my limited time doing what really matters: writing.""Chaotic Writer"
"I always had a difficult time managing all of the thoughts, ideas, and characters that were in my head. Using Penpoint made it so much easier to stay organized and make sure the story flows well and is cohesive. Even just a line or a character name I thought of can be saved and used when the time is right. Even for a novice writer such as myself, Penpoint makes you feel less like a noob, and more like a pro."Tara Briana Barber
"Penpoint lets me work the way I like and the tools are there waiting for me when I need them. The Flowstate aspect of Manuscript mode is a game changer!"Jen Yocom
"The most approachable writing tool, that cuts no corners!"Alagar
"It combines all the best features available elsewhere with interesting and new ideas. It's the perfect writer's companion."Patrick O'Dell
"Having a program that functions as an organization tool and a writing tool helps keep my writing on track. Being able to link significant places, relationships, character arcs and tie them in with the chapters I write is a huge time saver. I highly recommend."Megan
"Instead of ideas being scattered across Google Docs, notes on an iPad, and sticky notes, everything stays organized and centralized. The interface is clean, simple, and very easy to use, making it quick to focus on writing rather than figuring out complicated features."Robert
